Me:\u00a0 What does that stone say Prodigal?<\/p>\n

Prodigal:\u00a0 He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her<\/p>\n

Me:\u00a0 That is very good scripture there, Prodigal!<\/p>\n

Prodigal:\u00a0 What parable is connected with that?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Today I will share this scripture explained by Peter Marshall<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

…The woman lies before Christ in a huddled heap, sobbing bitterly…..<\/p>\n

shivering as she listens to the indictment.<\/p>\n

The penalty for adultery is stoning.<\/p>\n

Jesus’ steady eyes take in the situation at a glance.<\/p>\n

He sees what they try to hide from Him—<\/p>\n

the hard\u00a0faces that have no mercy or pity.<\/p>\n

Every hand holds a stone and clutching fingers run along the sharp edges with malicious satisfaction.<\/p>\n

They have brought the woman to Christ as a vindictive afterthought, not for formal trial,<\/p>\n

(for they have already tried her)<\/p>\n

but in a bold effort to trap Him.<\/p>\n

Either He will have to set aside the plain commandment<\/p>\n

of the law, or tacitly consent to a public execution….<\/p>\n

And has He not said often, “Be ye therefore merciful”<\/p>\n

How can he condemn the woman and still be merciful?<\/p>\n

The circle of bearded men wait impatiently for His answer….<\/p>\n

Christ looks into the faces of the men before Him, and steadily–with eyes that never blink–he speaks them:<\/p>\n

“He that is without sin among you,<\/p>\n

let him first cast a stone at her.”<\/p>\n

His keen glance rests upon the woman’s accusers one by one….<\/p>\n

There is the thud of stone after stone falling on the pavement.<\/p>\n

Not many of the Pharisees are left now.<\/p>\n

Looking into their faces Christ sees into the yesterdays that lie deep in the pools of memory and conscience.<\/p>\n

He sees into their very hearts…<\/p>\n

Idolater…..<\/p>\n

Liar….<\/p>\n

Drunkard…<\/p>\n

Murderer…..<\/p>\n

Adulterer….<\/p>\n

One by one, they creep away–like animals–slinking into the shadows…<\/p>\n

Shuffling off into the crowded streets to lose themselves in the multitudes.<\/p>\n

“He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone at her.”<\/p>\n

But no stones have been thrown.<\/p>\n

They lie around the woman on the pavement.<\/p>\n

She alone is left at the feet of Christ.<\/p>\n

The stillness is broken only by her sobbing.<\/p>\n

She still has not lifted her head….<\/p>\n

And now Christ looks at her.<\/p>\n

He does not speak for a long moment.<\/p>\n

Then, with eyes full of understanding, He says softly:<\/p>\n

“Woman, where are those thine accusers?<\/p>\n

Hath no man condemned thee?”<\/p>\n

And she answers,<\/p>\n

“No man, Lord.”<\/p>\n

That is all the woman says from beginning to end.<\/p>\n

She has no excuse for her conduct.<\/p>\n

She makes no attempt to justify what she has done.<\/p>\n

And Christ looking at her, seeing the tear-stained cheeks,<\/p>\n

seeing further into her heart,<\/p>\n

seeing the contrition there,<\/p>\n

says to her, “Neither do I condemn thee:<\/p>\n

go, and sin no more….”<\/p>\n

And His voice is like a candle at twilight,<\/p>\n

like a soft angels at the close of the day…..<\/p>\n

like the singing of a bird after the storm…<\/p>\n

It is healing music for the sin-sick heart.<\/p>\n

All is quiet for a while.<\/p>\n

If she breathes her gratitude, it is so soft that only<\/p>\n

He hears it.<\/p>\n

Perhaps He smiles upon her, as she slowly raises her eyes,<\/p>\n

a slow, sad smile of one who knows that He Himself<\/p>\n

has to pay the price for that absolution…..<\/p>\n

She has looked into the eyes of Christ.<\/p>\n

She has seen God.<\/p>\n

She has been accused<\/p>\n

convicted<\/p>\n

judged but not condemned.<\/p>\n

She has been forgiven!<\/p>\n

And now her head is up.<\/p>\n

Her eyes are shining like stars, for has she not seen<\/p>\n

the greatest miracle of all?<\/p>\n

It is more wonderful than the miracles of creation….<\/p>\n

more mysterious than the stars…<\/p>\n

more melodious than any symphony….<\/p>\n

more wonderful than life itself….<\/p>\n

that God is willing, for Christ’s sake, to forgive sinners<\/p>\n

like you and me….<\/p>\n

John 8:7<\/p>\n

So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.<\/p>\n
