In the summer of 1787 in Philadelphia, the Constitutional Convention was in full swing. \u00a0The sessions were long and wearying. \u00a0May and a part of June had come and gone. \u00a0There were marked differences and long debates. \u00a0At a critical point, Benjamin Franklin, the oldest delegate in the assembly, rose and mad a daring and impassioned speech:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mr. President: \u00a0The small progress we have made after four or five weeks close attendance…is, methinks a melancholy proof of the imperfection of human understanding. \u00a0We indeed seem to feel our want of political wisdom, since we have been running about in search of it…<\/strong><\/p>\n

In this situation…how has it happened, Sir, that we have not hitherto once thought of humbly applying to the Father of Lights to illumine our understanding? \u00a0In the beginning of the contest with Great Britain, when we were sensible of danger, we had daily prayer in this room. \u00a0Our prayers, Sir…were graciously answered….And have we now forgotten that powerful Friend? \u00a0Or do we imagine we no longer need His assistance?<\/strong><\/p>\n
