Honor to God

Prodigal: He ain’t done a nary thing in this game.

Me: Don’t push yourself up to far and put someone else down.

This is from the book Soul Winner by C.H. Spurgeon

Some men who have not had humility have been sent adrift from the ministry, for the Lord will not use those who will not ascribe the honor entirely to Him. Humility is one of the chief qualifications for usefulness. Many have passed away from the roll of useful men because they have been lifted up with pride, and so have fallen into “the snare of the devil”(1 Timothy 3:7).

Now you know what you are dealing with. You know the heart, and you know where evil has deceived. Make decisions based on this knowledge from God today.

Isaiah 43:2

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.

Breathe On Me Breath of God

Prodigal: God is all around us and He shows us His light.

Me: Amen to that.

Breathe On Me Breath of God

Breathe on me, Breath of God, fill me with life anew,

That I may love what thou dost love, and do what Thou wouldst do.

Breathe on me, Breath of God, until my heart is pure,

Until my will is one with Thine to do and to endure.

Breathe on me, Breath of God, till I am wholly Thine,

Until this earthly part of me glows with Thy fire divine.

Breathe on me, Breath of God, so shall I never die,

But live with thee the perfect of Thine eternity.

God’s Vengeance

Prodigal: Sometimes it is upsetting with what some people do.

Me: I agree, but God will judge all.

This is from Miroslav Volf from Croatia

If God were not angry at injustice and deception and did not make a final end to violence–that God would not be worthy of worship….The only means of prohibiting all recourse to violence by ourselves is to insist that violence is legitimate only when it comes from God….My thesis that the practice of non-violence requires a belief in divine vengeance will be unpopular with many…in the West ……(But) it takes the quiet of a suburban home for the birth of the thesis that human non-violence (results from the belief in) God’s refusal to judge. In a sun-scorched land soaked in the blood of the innocent, it will invariable die…..(with) other pleasant captivities of the liberal mind.

You do not have to think about, or seek vengeance because vengeance is the Lord. Praise Him that He knows all and you can not deceive Him.

As for me, I will be vindicated and will see your face; when I awake, I will be satisfied with seeing your likeness.

Scoffing

Prodigal: Sometimes we need to start out the day with a song to the Lord.

Me: Yes, Jesus paid it all and all to Him I owe!

Prodigal: I will sing that one with you.

This is from the book Vocabulary of Faith by Hampton Adams

Do not be hindered by those who scoff if you are about to adventure in this faith. There are plenty of people who scoff at love, but there are plenty more who are not affected by their scoffing because they know the strength and inspiration and peace of a love that has filled their days.

To capture the love of God and you spirit is filled with the faith that He does love you. To start your day and end your day knowing that this love has not changed. How would that change how you interacted with others. How would that change how you view yourself?

Isaiah 52:7

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.”

The Lamb of God

Prodigal: I’m plum tired after all that work.

Me: Take a breather and we can talk about Christ.

This is from the book Exceeding Gratitude for the Creator’s Plan by James P. Gills, M.D.

Martin Luther declared: Either sin is with you, lying on your shoulders, or it is lying on Christ, the Lamb of God. Now if it is lying on your back, you are lost; but if it is resting on Christ, you are free, and you will be saved. Now choose what you want.” Those who do not “choose” to receive the imputation of Christ’s righteousness by faith in Him alone find themselves “trying harder” to live a Christian life–and failing miserably.

We are not meant to try and be perfect. Christ is already perfect for us.

Psalms 91:1-2

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

People Need Each Other

Me: Looks like you got some fine friends there.

Prodigal: I sure do!

This is from the book How Can I Find You, God? by Majorie Holmes

People need each other so much, God. We need you, but we need each other, too. In a very human sense we need each other.

You don’t want us to be lonely, you give us people, many people (too many sometimes!). And out of the many you lead us to the few, the precious few we can really talk to.

And as we talk about things that really matter–troubles, hopes, confidences, things we wouldn’t dare share with anyone else–we go deeper. With a friend like this, who loves and understand us, we begin to talk about like and its meaning.

We talk about you.

Sometimes we discover you together. Two children groping, stumbling upon exciting aspects of your nature we couldn’t have found alone. And we look at each other amazed and marveling.

Or one of us will lead the other. The wise one (not necessarily the older) who has known you longer and more constantly, or more vividly experienced you….And this is so wonderful, to have a friend, man or woman, who walks confidently on his or her spiritual journey and says, “Come on, don’t be afraid.” Who, without preaching or inferring superiority, will help to clear the path and guide the way.

I have such a friend, Lord. I have several such friends. How can I ever thank you enough for them? They are surely a part of your plan for drawing each of us back to you.
