Whales

Prodigal: I think you are blind as a bat, this is not a whale.

Me: No, but I think a dolphin can understand this story also.

This is from the book, The Strong Willed Child by James Dobson

Whenever I’m tempted to become self-important and authoritative, I’m reminded of what the mother whale said to her baby: “When you get to the top and start to “blow,” that’s when you get harpooned!”

He will not suffer thy foot to be moved:
he that keepeth thee will not slumber.

Punishment

Prodigal: That turned out well!

Me: Thank you!

This is from The Insanity of Obedience by Nik Ripken

We desire that the persecutors be punished. Once again, this is a response that most people would barely question. We assume that, since persecution is evil, it deserves to be punished. We have been in numerous meetings led by well-known Western Christians that have focused on a call for military intervention on behalf of believers in persecution. Our commitment to stop persecution and punish “the bad guys” likely says more about the condition of our own hearts than about the needs of believers in settings of suffering.

Among the Jews

Prodigal: Trying to kill 2 birds with one stone.

Me: I get it.

This is from C.S. Lewis

Among the Jews there suddenly turns up a man who goes about talking as if He was God….Among Patheists anyone might say that he was a part of God, or one with God: there would be nothing very odd about it. But this man, since He was a Jew, could not mean that kind of god. God, in their language, meant the Being outside the world Who made it and was infinitely different from anything else. And when you have grasped that, you will see that what this man said was, quite simply, the most shocking thing that has ever been uttered by human lips.

To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colosse: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Colossians 1:2 (KJV)

Cancer is Limited

Me: I sure know that we can always turn to the Lord.

Prodigal: Yes, we can.

This is from the book The Finishing Touch by Charles Swindoll

Cancer is limited….

It cannot cripple love,

It cannot corrode faith,

It cannot eat away peace,

It cannot destroy confidence,

It cannot kill a friendship,

It cannot shut out memories,

It cannot silence courage,

It cannot invade the soul,

It cannot reduce eternal life,

It cannot quench the spirit,

It cannot lessen the power of the resurrection.

Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.

No Rest

Prodigal: We’re sitting for a spell.

Me: Remember not all will rest when you are resting.

This is from the book What Luther Says: An Anthology, Vol 1 by Ewald Plass

The devil takes no holiday; he never rests. If beaten, he rises again. If he cannot enter in front, he steals in the rear. If he cannot enter at the rear, he breaks through the roof or enters by tunneling under the threshold. He labors until he is in. He uses great cunning and many a plan. When one miscarries, he has another at hand and continues his attempts until he wins.

The Real Truth

Me: Look out for counterfeit.

Prodigal: I know what is real.

This is from Waiting from Ben Patterson

The American banking association once sponsored a two-week training program to help tellers detect counterfeit bills. The program was unique–never during the two-week training did the tellers even look at a counterfeit bill, nor did they listen to any lectures concerning the characteristics of counterfeit bills….All they did for two weeks was handle authentic currency, hour after hour and day after day, until they were so familiar with the true that they could not possibly be fooled by the false.

We need to study, meditate on, and apply God’s Word until we are so familiar with it that we cannot be fooled by anything less than real truth.

Cross

Prodigal: This is a beautiful cross!

Me: Yes, I have a great story about the cross.

This is from Christianity Is Christ by W.H. Griffith Thomas

Holman Hunt, a surrealistic artist, painted the interior of a carpenter’s shop, with Joseph and the boy Jesus working. Mary was also present. As Jesus paused in His work and stopped to stretch Himself, the sun made a shadow of the Cross on the wall. Another of his pictures is a popular engraving which depicts the infant Jesus running with outstretched arms to His mother, the shadow of the Cross being cast by His form as He runs. Both pictures are fanciful in form, but their underlying idea is assuredly true. If we read the Gospels just as they stand, it is clear that the death of Jesus Christ was really in view from the outset of His earthly appearance.

My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.
