Citizens of the United States

09-19-15 099

Me:  Howdy, Prodigal!  Where are you today?

Prodigal:  Walking down town and there are so many people here all over the place.  All the people in this country and we are so different.

Me:  I was just reading about some of the presidents in the United States and I thought I would share.

On March 23, 1798, John Adams proclaimed May 9, 1798 as a day of solemn humiliation, fasting and prayer.  The following is part of his proclamation:

As the safety and prosperity of nations ultimately and essentially depend on the protection and the blessing of Almighty God, and the national acknowledgment of this truth is not only an indispensable duty which the people owe to Him, but a duty whose natural influence is favorable to the promotion  of that morality and piety, without which social happiness cannot exist, nor the blessings of free government be enjoyed…and as the United States of America are, at present, placed in a hazardous and afflictive situation, by the unfriendly disposition, conduct, and demands of a Foreign Power (i.e. France)….Under these considerations it has appeared to me that the duty of imploring the mercy and benediction of Heaven on our country, demands, at this time, a special attention from its inhabitants.

I have, therefore, thought fit to recommend, and I do hereby recommend, that Wednesday, the ninth day of May next, be observed throughout the United States, as a day of Solemn Humiliation,  Fasting, and Prayer:  That the Citizens of these States, abstaining on that day from their customary worldly occupations, offer their devout addresses to the Father of Mercies, agreeable to those forms or methods which they have severally adopted as the most suitable and becoming:  That all Religious Congregations do, with the deepest humility, acknowledge before God the manifold sins and transgressions with which we are justly chargeable as individuals and as a nation, beseeching Him at the same time of His infinite grace through the Redeemer of the World, freely to remit all our offenses, and to incline us, by His Holy Spirit, to that sincere Repentance and Reformation, which may afford us reason to hope for His inestimable favour and Heavenly Benediction:  That it be made the subject of particular and earnest supplication, that our country may be protected from all the dangers which threaten it:  That our civil and religious privileges may be preserved inviolate, and perpetuated to the latest generations.. (Appendix no. 7 of volume 11 of U.S. Statutes At Large.)

Now some of you found that legal jargon very boring.  Some of you were intrigued by what is in our legal documents as our country.  Especially since some in this country are stating God is separate from our country.  What I want to point out is that there is an answer to what is happening to our country.  It is in this document.  We need to with humiliation go forth in fasting and prayer for our country at this time.   So before you tweet, snap chat, post, text, complain about what is going on.  Send a prayer to God right now.  If we all do, God will start working in the hearts of this country.

Want To Please

12-30-15 089

Me:  Howdy Prodigal!  Do you like that sign?

Prodigal:  I have seen this is someone’s house before and was just wondering what it meant?

Me:  Good question but I think it means different things to different people.

I will share from the Rachel Sinclair and her book Above Average For God

Overtime, as I became an adult and began to study God’s Word, the Lord softened my heart.  As I learned more of who He truly is and the exceptional life He desires for us to live, I began to understand that obedience is an attitude we choose more so than an action we do.  This attitude is cultivated from trust.  The more I know the Lord, the more I trust Him and want to please Him.  Before, my motivation to obey Him is an expression of my love and reverence for Him, which is a result of my trust in Him.

There was a time that I obeyed God to please others, than I obeyed God out of fear and now I am moving toward obeying God out of love and trust.

See God’s plans for me are amazing!  They never happen in my time table and guess what my life isn’t perfect but even in the hard times he is teaching me something so it seems I am always gaining from God.  Only a life following God can say that in all times joy can be found.  So as for me and my house, We WILL SERVE the LORD!

Joshua 1:7

Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you.  Do not turn from it to the right hand or the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.

Christ’s Death On the Cross

08-02-15 027

Me:  Howdy Prodigal are you with Jesus today?

Prodigal:  Yes,  I was just wondering about all that he did on the cross.

Me:  Yes, there is a lot that he did.  I like how Bruce Wilkinson describes the cross in his book Set Apart Discovering Personal Victory Through Holiness.

Since Christ’s death on the cross was the only “work”  God the Father would accept as payment for your sins, your good works are totally irrelevant in this regard.  From the beginning, even in the Garden of Eden, God said the punishment for disobedience is the death penalty.  Our good works may be acceptable restitution for breaking the speed limit or public drunkenness; but even in our courts, public service doesn’t count toward the death penalty, no matter how many hours are served or how difficult the work.

“Bad works” is merely another way of describing sin.  Since Christ’s death on the cross already paid for every single sin you have committed or will ever commit, stopping your sin won’t change anything regarding your salvation.  Whether you sin tomorrow or not you will not change the finished work of Christ two thousand years ago!

Therefore, regarding your salvation, you should feel entirely helpless.  No matter where you turn, there’s nothing you can do to fix the problem.  Not by trying harder and doing more good things.  Not by trying harder and avoiding more bad things.  You can’t do one single thing to fix the problem of your sin or earn forgiveness from God.

So what must you do to be saved?  Once again:  Absolutely nothing!  Well then, let me help you rephrase the question:  “Since I am a sinner and have willfully disobeyed God and rightly earned the eternal death penalty, how can I connect with what Christ did for me on the cross and know God’s forgiveness and be given eternal life?”

The beloved apostle John had your question in mind when he wrote, “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name” (John 1:12).

Salvation is a free gift, offered to all who will accept.  Because there’s absolutely, unequivocally nothing you can do,  because Jesus has absolutely and unequivocally finished everything for you, all that is left is merely to believe that He did it all for you and receive Him as your Savior.

Nothing more will work.  And nothing less will work.

Lamentations 3:22-23

Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassion fail not.  They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.

The Rat Race

12-30-15 076

Me:  Howdy, Prodigal  What are you doing?

Prodigal:  I am thinking about joining the “rat race”

Me:  Prodigal, I don’t think you understand what we mean when people say “rat race”.

Prodigal:  It doesn’t mean start hanging out with rats?

Me:   Not exactly.  Here Dr. James Gills in his book The Prayerful Spirit Passion for God Compassion for People he explains this is detail.

When we are aligned with God, our priorities are in line with His will, and we feel loved and protected.  When we get away from God, we can start to feel sorry for ourselves when times get rough.  We begin to believe we aren’t getting the love or recognition we deserve.

When we align ourselves with the pull of worldly influences, we are no longer controlled by the Lord.  We find ourselves being selfish, covetous proud, and uncaring.  Then we become irrational and start making bad decisions based on worry or fear.  We worry that we’re not getting ahead quickly enough in our careers or in the accumulation of worldly possessions.  We’re afraid of what others might say or think of us.  We buy into the world’s view of success and join the “rat race.”  We base our decisions and actions on pleasing others.

We should love others and that is different than pleasing others.  We should be in the world and not let the world control us.  When I am too focused on the world, I become selfish, uncaring.  I get negative.  I get ungrateful.

You know what makes everything change.  I don’t go shopping and get better things.  I go to the bible and I start praising Him.  How amazing it is that I have a place to sleep!  How amazing it is that someone will tell me they love me today.  How amazing it is that I can see God’s creation of a red flower that was designed by God himself!  How amazing that this morning God allowed my heart to beat and he allowed me to breathe.

Now it is your turn!
